作曲家の船村徹さんが亡くなった。私がもの覚えがついた頃、ラジオから船村徹作曲、春日一郎が歌う『別れの一本杉』が流れていた。昭和の時代のひとたちが、１世代、１世代と去っていくことを淋しく思います。
2月18日の中日新聞のコラム『中日春秋』を読んで、マクラの文章を翻訳してみました。兄が吹いたハーモニカ、それがきっと船村徹の原点だったんですね。

作曲家の船村徹さんには、十二も年の離れた兄がいた。陸軍士官学校に通う兄・健一さんは帰郷するたび、弟のふとんにもぐり込んでは、ハーモニカを吹いて聞かせてくれた。
何曲か演奏すると急に静かになり、厳しい顔つきでこう言ったという。「おまえは、軍人になるなよ」「死ぬのは、おれだけでいいんだから」。
そんな兄が二十三歳で戦死した時、既に父を亡くしていた船村さんは、一家の代表として「遺骨」を受け取りに行った。空襲で廃虚になった街を歩くと、「遺骨」と称する木の板が入った箱がカタカタと鳴ったそうだ（『兄の戦争』）。

A composer, Toru Funamura, had one elder brother. There were twelve differences in their age.
According to his story, whenever the elder brother, Kenichi, who was a student of the Military Academy, returned home, he got into his little brother’s futon and played harmonica for him.
After playing some musics, he fell silent abruptly and said with a stern look “My little brother, you never become a soldier, I must be the only person to die.”
When he died in the war at age 23, Mr Funamura went to receive his ash as a head of the family, because their father had already died. Walking down the street of the bombed ruined town, the wood plate called my elder brother’s ash contained inside the box sounded “Kata Kata.”
