原文4月３日の山陰中央新報のコラム『明窓』の冒頭
細菌は人体に害を与える微生物だが、ウイルスが生物かどうかは専門家でも意見が分かれているという。それ自身細胞を持たず自力で動くことができないウイルスは、生物とは言い切れない。生物と似た構造を持つ「物質」との見方もできるらしい。
「物質」にしてはその生き残り戦略は巧妙にできている。ヒトなど生物の細胞に侵入して自分自身をコピーすることで増殖。宿主となる細胞から細胞へコピーの場を広げていくことで生き延びていくため、感染を広げていくことが生存戦略となる。
